Everything, Everywhere, All At Once Movie Review
I already knew that Everything Everywhere All At Once was going to be crazy when I walked into the theater, but I never expected it to be one of the best films of 2022. Considering that I’m not the biggest fan of A24 studios’ movies, that’s quite an accomplishment. Everything Everywhere All At Once is an A24 film about Evelyn Wang, an unlikely hero who must channel her newfound powers to fight bizarre dangers from across the multiverse. Everything Everywhere All At Once was the perfect cocktail of action, comedy and drama that kept me on the edge of my seat for its entirety.
One of the best aspects about this movie was its action, specifically the fight scenes. It had fantastic choreography that blended well with what was happening in the story. Evelyn is able to channel the skills of a different version of herself and use those skills in a fight. For example, in one fight Evelyn accessed the skills of a sign waver, she then used those skills to grab an officer's riot shield and twirl it around skillfully as a weapon. How this movie translates these random skills in the choreography made the fights both creative and fun to watch.
I was also surprised by how hilarious this movie ended up being. It was the type of humor that would hide in the background of the drama and action, before shocking me with something that was over the top. The funniest moment for me was when Evelyn was fighting a bad guy, and in order to access the skills of his alternate self, the bad guy had to do something invasive to his netherregion to do it. I thought the movie just hinting at what he needed to do was crazy enough, but it takes things to the next level when it does the comedic version of a “jump scare” by actually showing the bad guy perform this task. It was moments like this that had me gasping for breath from laughing too hard.
The best thing about this movie was performances of the cast, specifically the lead Michelle Yeoh. Yeoh plays Evelyn Wang and she does it all in this movie, being funny, dramatic, and an action star. I love how she portrayed Evelyn as a traumatized individual who was terrible at EVERYTHING but could also bust out martial art moves that I haven't seen her use since her performance in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Yeoh showcases her skills as an actress and hopefully it lands her more lead roles in the future. I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets nominated for an Oscar sometime in the future.
Everything Everywhere All At Once is a must see, so drop whatever you are doing and watch it At Once!
